Here is how to make a quantum improvement in
your putt stroke. There are four aspects to the Putt: Stoke, Glide,
Impact, Launch. Here we will cover the topic of
how to improve your Putt Stroke;
but, before we get started, let's make sure we have common understanding of that
term.
Stroke is the movement of the putter as it is
being used to propel the ball toward the target and it consists of 1)
Back-Stroke, 2) Power-Stroke, and 3) Follow-Through. The Power-Stroke is the
operative component in putting precision and Back-Stroke and Follow-Through only
serve to improve the Power-Stroke. Good Stroke occurs when: 1) The Plane defined
by the movement of the Power-Stroke intersects with the horizontal surface plane
so as to create a line which is coincident with the intended direction line of
ball launch, and when 2) The Power component of the Power-Stroke is sufficient
to propel the launched ball to the target.
Deciding on the Direction and Power of the
Stroke is a matter of Judgment, and proper alignment of the Stroke is a matter
of Fitting, Technique and Technology. We will cover the topic of Putt Stroke
Technology here; but put your thinking cap on because this is going to get technical.
Power is a function of Mass and Speed. The greater the mass and speed of an
object the greater will be the power it exerts on another object upon impact.
This is as true for freight train about to crash into a stalled car on the
tracks, as it is for a putter thatis about to impact a ball on the green, as it
is for a driver that is about to impact a ball on the tee. Let's not even think
about what is going to happen to the stalled car; instead, let's concentrate on
golf driving and putting.
There is a major difference between Putting and Driving and that's why so
many say that the green game is altogether different than the fairway game. In
driving, speed is the greatest factor in the stroke and a good stable driving
stroke requires a Driver that is made for speed. In putting though, stroke speed
is very slow so a good stable putting stroke requires a Putter that is massive.
So, drivers should have minimized head mass and
maximized shaft lengths so great speed can be generated during the fast driving
stroke; Putters on the other hand should have maximized head mass and minimized
shaft length so great stability can be generated during the the slow putting
stroke.
During our research, we found that virtually all currently existing putters
have insufficient mass to create a smooth putting stroke. Without sufficient
mass, the slow putting stroke wavers, and a wavering stroke cannot make a true
plane of movement, and without a true plane of movement the putter will most
likely not impact the ball in proper alignment with the intended direction of
launch. That's a real putting precision problem! The solution to this problem is to make a more massive putter. The head mass
of most putters currently on the market is down in the range of 10 to 12 ounces
(280 to 336 grams) and that is insufficient to sustain a smooth unwavering
stroke at slow speeds required during putting. Head masses at least double that
are required to stabilize the slow putting stoke.
The head mass of the
lightest Model X Quantum Putter is 14 ounces (396 grams), the head mass of our
medium Model XX is 19
ounces (539 grams), and the head mass of our heaviest Model XXX is 22 ounces (624
grams). In contrast the mass of other existing putters is much less.
So the advantage the Quantum Putter has over other existing putters is that it
is stable at slow putting stroke speeds and this maximizes the probability of
ball launch in the intended direction, and that enables precision putting.
