You can have the best in putter technology and you can be
perfectly fitted and you can have fully perfected technique, but if your putting
judgment is undeveloped, you will still be missing
putts. The way you can gain putting judgment is by practice and play - not just
play only.
Here are the practice drills
recommended by our Coach/Dealer in Australia, Grant Westthorp who operates a
business in Albany called Simpli Golf
System which serves the golfing market in Australia, New Zealand, and East
Asia.
Length of Back
Swing Drill
On a flat part of the practice green place two
tees in the ground a yard apart. Set a ball in between the tees. The distance
between the ball and back tee will limit your back swing and give you a better
idea of how little swing is needed to send the golf ball to touch the other tee
a half yard away. Generally most golfers have an abundant back swing and little
follow through. This drill limits the swing back and encourages the follow
through.
Positive Putting
Stroke Rate Drill
The best putters in the world tend to have one thing in common. They have a
consistent positive stroke rate. This means that the hands stroke back and
through to a set rhythm. It is not fast nor is it slow. To find this magical
rhythm you will need to select two short words (or a two syllable word like "Quan-tum").
One for the back swing and one for the forward swing. Then verbalize the words in
time to the movement. Positive putting stroke will deliver Peak Performance on
the putting green.
Follow the Leader Drill
To read greens proficiently
takes more than a modicum of imagination. You must be able to visualize both the
amount of break or borrow on the golf green required
as well as the correct length of stroke needed to get the golf ball up to the
back lip of the hole. This drill will cover both of these necessary traits. You
will need 2 golf balls and your putter. The idea of this drill is to roll one
golf ball away from you. Then stroke the second golf ball to touch the 1st ball.
Pay special attention to the way the 1st ball rolls; then mirror that same
amount of movement with the 2nd golf
ball. This drill will engage your imagination both for allowing the right amount
of break for the putt being attempted as well as the necessary stroke required
to sink the putt.
3 Tee Drill
If you are playing away from
your home club or just want to dramatically improve your putting here is a drill
that will deliver success. Simply place 3 tees at different lengths on the
practice putting green and use only 1 golf ball to putt between the 3 tees. The
par is 6 and the hole is completed when the ball touches the tee. You will pick
up on the speed of the greens using this drill and also when you get out onto
the golf course the hole will look like a 54 gallon drum!
