Fairway clubs have tapered grips for a purpose - golfers swing hard and fast out on the fairway and so a tapered grip tends to assist the hand hold during the great centrifugal force of a fast fairway swing. But the putting stroke is slow and deliberate and needs no such hand hold assistance.

Instead the putting stroke is done on a contoured surface which requires the golfer to sometimes choke up or down on the shaft to achieve tangency with the surface of the green.  Since the putting stroke is slow and deliberate, there is no need to have a tapered grip, so a Linearly Symmetrical Grip is beneficial to precision putting since it feels the same whether choked up or down.
