TEST YOUR PUTTER FOR SWEET
IMPACT CAPABILITY |
|

TAP
TEST
Hold
your putter loosely with one hand and then tap where on the head where you are
supposed to strike the ball – if this tapping causes the putter head to
rotate even the slightest, then your putter has no sweet spot and is not
capable of sweet impact dynamics. |
|

SPIN
TEST
Hold
your putter between the palms of your hands and then move your palms to and
fro to cause the putter head to spin one way then the other – if this
spinning wobbles even in the slightest, you’re your putter is out of balance
and incapable of sweet impact. |

"I came across your
website and have been reading it for over an hour and I am blown away! You
give the best explanation about putters and putting I have ever read and
that's saying something because I have been a PGA member for over 50 years
and active in teaching putting almost that entire time. Quantum is the only
putter that has it right."
Later he writes,
"There is no question in my mind that the science that has gone into this
putter is of the highest order. High on the list are the training alignment
aids that go with this putter, they are extremely valuable, plus you have
the opportunity to change the weights in the head, if you so desire. To say
the least, I am very impressed with my new Quantum Putter.

"The Quantum is so different than
anything else that comparing it to other putters is like trying to compare
apples and oranges. My major concern about the Quantum was its negative loft
because so many were telling me that a loft was needed to lift the ball up
out of a turf indent; but that was quickly dispelled and to prove the point
to myself, I actually stepped on a few balls to push them further down into
the green and I found that the rolling launch still always occurred."

and ever since I sold my company to TaylorMade, I have always said that if I
were to go back into the business it would be with a putter rather than the

bending/breaking the shaft, and your analogy about heel shafting tennis
racquets made the point about how ridiculous it is to heel shaft putters. I
look forward to using my new Quantum Putter and I'll be happy to give you

Here is how to make a quantum improvement in
your Putt Launch. There are four aspects to the Golf Putt: Stoke,
Glide, Impact, Launch. Here we will cover the topic of Putt Launch,
but before we get started, let's make sure we have common understanding of that
term.
Launch is the movement of the ball which is
caused by Impact. Like Impact, Launch is hard to explain without getting overly
technical; suffice it to say that Good Launch is rolling the ball on the green
in the right direction with the right power without loft and with an initial
topspin that equals the initial roll.
Technique and Technology affect good launch; we
will talk technology now and save Technique for
another time. Put your thinking cap on because this is going to get technical.
Besides Direction and Distance, which is obviously
an important aspect of putting precision, there are two other lesser known
aspects of Launch: Spin and Loft.
All three need to be considered in the technology of Launch.
Direction and Distance Technology
Direction and Distance is a direct result of Impact. Good Direction and Good
Distance comes from Good Impact which comes from Good Glide which comes from
Good Stroke. But Good Direction and Distance can be adversely affected by Spin and Loft.
Spin Technology
Any bar-room pool shooter can tell
you that when his pool cue impacts the ball above the cue ball's center-of-gravity
(COG), the cue ball will be launched with topspin, but when impact is below COG,
launch will have backspin.
The technology of this is well
understood by physicists and can easily be explained by the mathematics of
geometry and vector analysis. Unfortunately most golfers are not physicists nor are they apt
to know
much about geometry and vector analysis. So let's put this in layman's
terms as best we can:
Whenever impacting power is applied
offset of the COG, then rotational movement in favor of the offset will be the
result. This is called torque. So when the impacting power of the
putter head is applied above the ball's COG, then the ball will get top
rotational movement (topspin). And when the impacting power is applied below
the ball's COG, then the ball will get bottom rotational movement (backspin).
Every good bar-room pool shooter will
tell you that when faced with a long shot, he will want to keep the ball on the
surface of the table and impart just enough topspin on the ball to match the
roll that is needed for the shot. He knows that any amount of skid or excessive
spin of any kind will be adverse to his accuracy of direction. The same is true
for a putt on the golf green.
The Technology of
Loft
Any golfer can tell you that the
fairway club having a greater loft angle will launch the ball higher into the
air. In fact, loft angle is the fundamental difference between the thirteen
fairway clubs in a golfer's full bag. The driver has the least loft angle and
launches the ball with the lowest loft; the wedge has the greatest loft angle and launches
the ball the greatest loft; and the other fairway clubs range in between.
So far this all makes perfectly good
sense to every golfer.
But when you ask a golfer (even a
good one), about the loft of a putter, the response usually ranges from utter
confusion and absolute non-sense. Golfers intuitively know that
launching a putt up into the air causes bounce and that bouncing a putt on the
green is bad for putting precision. They also know from experience with the
other clubs in their bag that it is the loft angle of the club that causes
launch. But putter makers and many putting pundits for some inexplicable reason have
been trying for a long time to make golfers believe that loft in a putter is a
good thing. Of course, that goes against what golfers intuitively know and that's what
causes all the confusion.
Again, the technology of this is well
understood by physicists and can easily be explained by the mathematics of
geometry and vector analysis. But let's explain this in terms almost anybody can
understand:
Picture in your mind a Circle sitting on a Horizontal
Line. Now add a Triangle sitting on the Line pointing toward the Circle. Next
picture the Triangle moving toward the Circle in an attempt to push the Circle
down the Line. Wouldn't the Circle feel both a Forward Force and an Upward Force
caused by the forward movement of the leading slope of the Triangle?
Wouldn't the Forward Force move
the Circle down the Line (distance) and the Upward Force move the
Circle up off the line (loft). Can you see how the angle affects
distance and launch - the sharper the angle, the lesser the distance and the
greater the lofting; the blunter the angle, the greater the distance and the
lesser the lofting. So, wouldn't it make perfect sense that when you want all distance and no lofting (which is
what golfers want when they putt on the golf green), you'd want no loft
angle at all?
This is not rocket science!
During our research, we found currently existing putters have
shortcomings which adversely effect Good Launch. Most do not facilitate Good Stroke
which results in Bad Glide; putters with bad glide cannot facilitate good impact;
and putters with bad impact cannot facilitate good launch. Furthermore, we found
most currently existing putters actually were designed to create...
- Adverse backspin (or skid at best).
- Adverse loft.
To our astonishment, we could not find a single putter currently on the
market which met all requirements for Good Launch. Of course, without good launch, precision putting
not possible.
Why is Good Launch so important?
Even if your putter Impact launches with perfect direction, adverse backspin
or skid will adversely affect that direction, and a bouncy loft will
unpredictably affect that direction even further. Anything that adversely or
unpredictably affects Direction makes precision putting impossible - that's a
major problem!
Solution to the Problem
The solution to the problem is for the putter to have a slight negative loft
angle, the extent of which is perfected by experimentation -- that will
completely solve the problems of Launch Bounce/Skid/Backspin.
A slight negative loft angle causes the striking surface of the putter head
to impact the ball just above the ball's COG; that causes offset top force
which when combined with the bottom offset counterforce of friction, puts the exact amount torque on the ball so that resulting topspin
exactly matches required roll.
This slight negative loft angle also prevents the ball from being
lofted into the air (bounce); but it does even more: It also causes the
ball to be pushed ever so slightly into the turf so that friction will
prevent skid and also provide the counterforce needed to make topspin.
The solution to the problem is simple and singular:
Get a putter which embodies all requirements for Good Launch. Then
you will enjoy the benefit of a putter which launches the ball in your
intended direction with no adverse bounce or skid or backspin. So far the
only putter we know of that does this is the Quantum Putter, so your choice
is a simple one.
