TEST YOUR PUTTER FOR SWEET
IMPACT CAPABILITY |
|

TAP
TEST
Hold
your putter loosely with one hand and then tap where on the head where you are
supposed to strike the ball – if this tapping causes the putter head to
rotate even the slightest, then your putter has no sweet spot and is not
capable of sweet impact dynamics. |
|

SPIN
TEST
Hold
your putter between the palms of your hands and then move your palms to and
fro to cause the putter head to spin one way then the other – if this
spinning wobbles even in the slightest, you’re your putter is out of balance
and incapable of sweet impact. |

"I came across your
website and have been reading it for over an hour and I am blown away! You
give the best explanation about putters and putting I have ever read and
that's saying something because I have been a PGA member for over 50 years
and active in teaching putting almost that entire time. Quantum is the only
putter that has it right."
Later he writes,
"There is no question in my mind that the science that has gone into this
putter is of the highest order. High on the list are the training alignment
aids that go with this putter, they are extremely valuable, plus you have
the opportunity to change the weights in the head, if you so desire. To say
the least, I am very impressed with my new Quantum Putter.

much smoother than they did with any of my former putters (Ping, Ping G5i

"The Quantum is so different than
anything else that comparing it to other putters is like trying to compare
apples and oranges. My major concern about the Quantum was its negative loft
because so many were telling me that a loft was needed to lift the ball up
out of a turf indent; but that was quickly dispelled and to prove the point
to myself, I actually stepped on a few balls to push them further down into
the green and I found that the rolling launch still always occurred."

"I was the inventor of MetalWoods
and ever since I sold my company to TaylorMade, I have always said that if I
were to go back into the business it would be with a putter rather than the
other clubs in a full set. I understand perfectly what you said about
bending/breaking the shaft, and your analogy about heel shafting tennis
racquets made the point about how ridiculous it is to heel shaft putters. I
look forward to using my new Quantum Putter and I'll be happy to give you
whatever help and advise I can from my experience as a golf club
entrepreneur."

Here is how to make a quantum improvement in
your Putt Impact. There are four aspects to the Golf Putt: Stoke,
Glide, Impact, Launch. Here we will cover the topic of
Putt Impact,
but before we get started, let's make sure we have common understanding of that
term.
Impact is the point at which energy is
transmitted from the moving putter head to the stationary ball, thus causing the
ball to be launched. Good impact is hard to explain without getting overly
technical; suffice it to say that it is what tennis players mean when they say
"sweet impact" or "hitting the sweet spot".
Technology and Technique effect Impact; we will
cover the Technology of Impact here and leave Technique for later;
but put your thinking cap on because this is going to get technical.
There are three requirements for
Sweet Impact Dynamics: 1)The Power Vector (putter shaft) must
be perfectly straight. 2)The Power Vector must be aligned such
that it intersects into the center of gravity of the putter head. 3)The putter must be stroked such that
the center of gravity of the impacting object (putter head) impacts the center
of gravity of the impacted object (ball) along the plane of movement of the
power vector (putter shaft). Sweet Impact Dynamics is destroyed if
any one of these requirements is botched.
During our research, we found that every currently existing putter has
shortcomings which adversely effect impact. Many have bent shafts or broken "Anser" styled shafts which violate the
first requirement. Many have heel shafting which violates the second requirement. Many are "face balanced" (which actually means they are shafted such that
they are unbalanced toward the face) which violates the third requirement. Others are "toe/heel balanced" (this actually means they are shafted such
that they are unbalanced toward the toe/heel) which also violates the third
requirement. To our astonishment, we could not find a single putter currently on the
market which met all three requirements for Sweet Impact Dynamics. Of course,
without sweet impact dynamics, precision putting is impossible.
Some putter makers try to minimize shaft vibration by incorporating a soft
striking pad onto the face of their putter, mistakenly thinking that the
vibration is caused by the impact itself. A soft striking pad only dampens
impact somewhat which lessens launch power which causes a putting shortfall;
obviously this putting shortfall must be overcome by applying more power, which
in-turn overcomes the dampening of the impact caused by a soft striking pad - so
where are we?... right back to where we started. The only way to overcome shaft
vibration is with a straight shaft. So if a golfer wants a satisfying
"thud" instead of an annoying "ping", he needs to use a putter with a straight
shaft.
Some putter makers try to minimize the impact torque caused by misaligned
heel shafting with "high moment of inertia". Most ordinary people don't really
know what inertia really is much less do they know what moment of inertia really
is, so lets pause a moment to learn exactly what these terms mean before moving
on with this topic.
Inertia is a scientific term which describes the following fundamental
property of matter: An object at rest tends to remain at rest unless a
force is applied to make it move; likewise an object that is moving tends to
continue moving at its current pace unless a force is applied to make it move
less or move more. This resistance to any change in movement is called
"Inertia".
Moment of Inertia is a scientific term which describes the following
fundamental property of matter: An object at rest tends to remain at rest unless
a torque is applied to make it rotate; likewise an object that is rotating tends
to continue to rotate at its current pace unless a torque is applied to make it
rotate less or rotate more. This resistance to any change in rotation is called
"Moment of Inertia".
Torque is a force which is applied to an object offset of the object's
Center of Gravity, thus causing rotation of the object about it's center of
gravity.
Okay, now that we know what we are talking about, let's continue. Misaligned
shafting (shafting that is not aligned perfectly with the head's center of
gravity) will upon impact with the ball always generate an offset force (torque)
which opens the club face at the worst possible time - ball launch. Yes, this
adverse torque is resisted by the head's Moment of Inertia and so by increasing
the Moment of Inertia of the head, this adverse torque can be lessened. But
lessening a problem does not solve the problem. The only solution to this
problem is to eliminate impact torque and that can only be done by properly
aligned shafting.
Why is Sweet Impact Dynamics so important?
With Sweet Impact Dynamics, you will feel that satisfying "thud" of a solid
hit, a feeling seldom felt
by golfers because of the prevalence of heel shafting and the popularity
bent/broken shafts. There are two simple tests you can perform on your own putter to find out if
it is capable of sweet impact dynamics (SEE LEFT SIDEBAR). If your putter fails either of these tests, then you have a
putter which incapable of Sweet Impact Dynamics -- a putter which is
actually designed to help you miss your putts!
Technology of Sweet Impact Dynamics
Heel Shafting destroys sweet impact dynamics because at impact the striking
face of the putter head is torqued open by the offset transfer of energy at
impact. That causes the launch to veer off intended direction and it also
imparts an adverse lateral spin upon the ball which causes the ball to veer
off its intended path. Some putter makers tout "high moment of inertia" as
the solution to this torque problem, but while it helps a little, it does
not really solve the problem. The solution to the problem is to eliminate
the adverse torque entirely by perfectly aligned shafting with a perfectly
straight shaft.
Bent/Broken Style Shafts also destroy sweet impact dynamics because at
impact the rebound energy that must be absorbed by the putter needs to be
transferred up the shaft to the golfers hands. If the shaft is not perfectly
straight, this transfer of energy will cause a vibration of the shaft. This
is not a big problem so it will go unnoticed until the golfer learns how
good it feels not to have this vibration.
It is important to bring this understanding home especially when most people
tend to glaze over technically difficult subjects such as we are discussing.
Sometimes, the points can be brought home the best with silly but effective
cartoon comparisons (SEE LEFT SIDEBAR ENTITLED, "SWEET IMPACT FOR DUMMYS").
Because of the long tradition of heel shafting which makes sweet impact
dynamics impossible, golfers don't know how good sweet impact feels -- every
golfing stroke has to be adjusted for the torque caused by heel shafting and
golfers have had to become accustomed to the annoying vibration that "sour
impact dynamics" sends up the shaft. Because of USGA Rules there can never
be any relief for this problem in drivers, but because there is an exception
to the USGA Rules for putters, a putter can be designed which is actually
capable of "sweet impact dynamics". This is huge! This is what we have
done so now finally golfers can actually enjoy the great feel and improved
performance of sweet impact at least when putting -- all they need is the
new technology Quantum Putter. Our research found no other putter currently
on the market which is designed for Sweet Impact, so there is no comparison;
the Quantum is your only choice for this extremely important benefit.
