Here is how to make a quantum improvement in
your Putt Glide. There are four aspects to the Putt: Stoke,
Glide, Impact, Launch. Here we will cover the topic of
Putt Glide; but, before we get started, let's make sure we have
common understanding of that term.
Glide is the movement of the putter across
the surface of the green as it approaches the point of impact. Good Glide is
movement which is unimpaired by the surface of the green.
Fitting and Technology affect Glide. Here we
cover the Technology of Glide, Fitting will be left for
another time. Put your thinking cap on because this is going to get technical.
Good Glide is adversely affected three ways:
1) FRICTION is a restraining force which impairs good glide by excessively
slowing glide; thus stroke power is reduced and that causes putts to fall short.
2) LEADING EDGE BITE causes a halting force which severely impairs good glide by abruptly
slowing or even stopping glide just before impact; thus stroke power is
reduced and that causes putts to fall short. 3) TRAILING EDGE DRAG causes not
only a slowing of intended stroke but even worse, it causes an upward lunge of the striking face just before impact which
ruins sweet impact dynamics and causes unpredictable and adverse
results.
During our research, we found that virtually all currently existing putters have
shortcomings which adversely effect glide. Many as a result of recent trends in
styling that favor a high-tech appearance with very sharp leading edges which
tend to bite the green. Others as a result of the craze of mallet putters have
very large footprints which result in excessive friction, and a big front to back
dimension which results in trailing edge drag, and odd shaping which increases
the amount of leading edge that is susceptible to bite. These are real
problems which cause missed putts!
The solution to these glide problems: 1)Minimize the Front-to-Back
Dimension because this decreases footprint area which reduces friction and
lessens the potential of trailing edge drag. 2) Round-over all leading edges so
as to lessen the potential for leading edge bite. 3) Eliminate odd shaping and
openings in the sole of the putter head which increase the amount of leading
edge which is susceptible to leading edge bite.
Leading Edge Bite is Bad because it unexpectedly slows and in extreme
cases actually abruptly stops the glide of the putter at the most critical time
-- just before impact. This slowing causes your intuitive putting power to
decrease and that of course causes the ball to fall short of your intended
target. Obviously this is bad for putting precision.
Trailing Edge Drag is Bad because not only does it unexpectedly slow
the glide of the putter like bite, but it is even worse. It actually causes an
upward bounce of the striking face of the putter at the worst possible time -
just before impact. This upward bounce destroys the application of your
intuitive power onto the ball and obviously that is bad for putting precision.
Golfers who use mallet putters have to flatten their pendulum stroke in order to
overcome this problem and of course that bad putting form just adds to the
overall problem.
Friction is not as bad because it slows
the putting glide in a proportionate way which is easily adjusted for. So while
it is not good and should be minimized, it is not a killer defect in putting
technology.
